Startup of the Day
The Single Origin Food Co, Delaware (USA)
Source: Vegnews
What’s the deal: Founded in 2015, Single Origin Food Co (Sofco) offers Vegan Un-Honey, a plant-based honey substitute made with natural ingredients and fortified with organic flower pollen, without disrupting the lives of honey bees. Sofco has recently secured $1.1M in seed funding.
Underlying trends: AgriTech, Sustainability, DTC
Why it matters: The company focuses on ethically sourced products with sustainable, long-term production cycles.
It claims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase biodiversity, and remove the use of animals from the food chain while supplying products of the highest quality.
Sofco works directly with farmers globally and sells to 3,500+ supermarkets all over the US. Its core portfolio includes salt, sugars, and rice; however, the launch of plant-based honey has resulted in a major growth surge for the company.
Each product is exclusively prepared to very stringent standards on one farm, so its origins are transparent. The product is then shipped to Kentucky, where it is packaged and prepared for distribution.
Our take: The US vegan food market is expected to reach a value of $31.4B by 2026, and Sofco has a high potential for growth as sustainability becomes a priority around the world.
But, Sofco is not the only company disrupting the food industry with innovation. MeliBio, founded recently, is also using plant science to make traditional honey, apparently with significant success.
